Thanks for checking in!
I don’t know how much you guys know about Denmark in general or how much you’ve heard of Danish people.
Being a proud Dane myself, I will try to give you 8 Things To Know About Danes!
1. We Love “Hygge”
If you’ve ever seen videos or head anything about Danes on social media, you’ve probably heard about our term “hygge”.
There are a lot of different interpretations about this term as everybody has their own way of “doing” it.
Basically, it’s all about feeling comfy and having a good time. Here is the definition from the Oxforddictionaries.com:
“A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being”
2. We Are Very Extroverted
We like to say things the way they are. Compared to the different countries I’ve visited I would say, besides from Ireland, Denmark and the Danish people are very happy to talk and state their opinion on everything.
If you ever visit our country, all you got to do is reach out and you’ll most likely be accepted into the group and our culture!
3. We Are Very Happy
According to everybody we are the happiest people in the world. Yesterday I read that in 2018 we were in the top 3 of the happiest people in the world.
If you’d like to read more about why we are constantly fooling around having a good time, you can read the 7 Reasons Denmark is the happiest country in the world from the Independent. It might be from 2016 but still highly relevant!
4. We Love To Drink
SKÅL! (Cheers in Danish)
I’m not sure if we are as happy as we are because of alcohol. Nonetheless, we love to drink and everything that comes with it. It doesn’t matter if it’s just a few guys hanging out playing FIFA, a day at the harbour, at a festival, or anywhere else – we love it.
In 2017, the Nordic Business Insider wrote an article about how Young Danes hold the European record for drinking.
5. We Invented LEGO
Yes, we invented it. Nobody else. LEGO is short for “Leg Godt” which is translated “Play Well”. We are very proud of the product that’s known all over the world.
Not much to say about this – I’m sure you know what LEGO is.
6. We Can’t Say Please
Even though we are super polite, we actually do not have a direct translation of “please“. We would be using “thank you” or “thanks a lot” if we would use any at all.
7. We Love Irony & Sarcasm
There is not better than taking the piss of your friends and family. We love to use irony and sarcasm to state our opinion on something.
We love to make fun of ourselves and everyone else. It’s a common thing in Denmark that everyone will get “roasted” by everyone. Even the Royale Family.
Therefore, if you ever visit – don’t be offended.
8. We Have Letters You Don’t Have
We know our language is tough to understand and speak. To make things harder, we also have three letters which aren’t found in the English. The letters are Æ, Ø, and Å.
I believe there are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to pronounce the Danish letters.
If you’d like I can translate a few things in another post.
We know the Danish language is hard, but we, as a people are amazing. We love to explore and we love talking to people from other countries.
We like to drink, we like to be social and we are crazy happy – what’s not to love.
Don’t be scared to drop by for a visit!
Thanks for reading guys,
